Doubled Mirrors

It is the dark of the moon.                어두운 달밤,
Late at night, the end of summer,     여름의 끝자락,
The autumn constellations              가을 별자리가
Glow in the arid heaven.                 건조한 밤하늘에 빛난다.
The air smells of cattle, hay,           소와 건초와 흙 냄새가 대기에 있다.
And dust. In the old orchard            옛 과수원에 배가 익었다.
The pears are ripe. The trees          그 나무들은
Have sprouted from old rootstocks   늙은 뿌리에서 나온 것으로
And the fruit is inedible.                  그 과실은 못먹는 것이다.
As I pass them I hear something      거기를 지나는데 뭔가
Rustling and grunting and turn          바스락거리고 꿀꿀거리는 소리가 들린다.
My light into the branches.              난 손전등을 그쪽으로 비춰본다.
Two raccoons with acrid pear         너구리 두 마리가
Juice and saliva drooling                 매캐한 배즙과 침을
From their mouths stare back at me, 입가로 흘리며 날 응시한다.
Their eyes deep sponges of light.    그들의 눈은 깊은, 빛의 스펀지다.
They know me and do not run         그들은 날 알고, 달아나지 않는다.
Away. Coming up the road              검은 오크 나무들 그림자 속으로
Through the black oak shadows, I   길을 더 나아가다
See ahead of me, glinting                앞에
Everywhere from the dusty              흙 많은 자갈길에 온통,
Gravel, tiny points of cold                작은 차가운 푸른 빛들을 본다.
Blue light, like the sparkle of            마치 철(鐵)의 눈의 반짝임 같다.
Iron snow. I suspect what it is,        난 그것이 무엇인지 궁금해서
And kneel to see. Under each          무릎을 꿇고 본다.
Pebble and oak leaf is a                 돌이나 오크 나뭇잎 밑에는
Spider, her eyes shining at             모두 거미가 있다,
Me with my reflected light               그들의 눈이 내 손전등의 빛을
Across immeasurable distance.      무한한 거리를 너머 내게 되비추며.
