Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,

숲이 마을에 사는 어떤 사람의 것이라는 말을 왜 하는지 예전부터 궁금하게 여겼는데, 아마
어떤 것을 소유하는 것과 그것에서 아름다움을 느끼는 것은 별개라는 의미를 담고 있는 듯하다.

"연중 가장 캄캄한 저녁"은 冬至를 의미할 수도 있겠으나, 'evening'이 저녁이 아니라 밤을
뜻하는 경우가 많고 여기서도 밤으로 해석하는 게 나을 것 같으므로 그냥 날씨 때문에 어두운
것으로 보는 게 좋겠다.

눈이 '내리지' 않고 숲이 눈으로 '차고(fill up)' 있다는 게 색다르다. 평지라면 눈으로 찬다는
말을 하지 않을 것이다. 숲이니까 그런 표현을 할 수가 있다. 그리고 눈이 내리는 것에선 어떤
끝, 시한이 느껴지지 않지만 '차는' 것에선 그런 느낌이 있다.
