Night Mail

This is the Night Mail crossing the border,              이것은 야간우편열차, 경계를 넘어서
Bringing the cheque and the postal order,               수표, 우편환, 편지들을 싣고서
Letters for the rich, letters for the poor,                   부자들의 것, 가난한 자들의 것
The shop at the corner and the girl next door.         길모퉁이의 가게 것, 옆집 소녀 것
Pulling up Beattock, a steady climb:                      비톡을 향해 꾸준히 오르네
The gradient's against her, but she's on time.        가파르지만 시간을 지키네
Past cotton-grass and moorland boulder                목화밭과 자갈밭을 지나며
Shovelling white steam over her shoulder,              증기를 어깨 너머로 뿌리며
Snorting noisily as she passes                             그녀가 달리며 내뿜는 콧바람들
Silent miles of wind-bent grasses.                         바람에 구부러진 수 마일의 풀들

Birds turn their heads as she approaches,             그녀가 지나가자 새들이 돌아보네
Stare from the bushes as her blank face coaches,  덤불 속에서 무표정한 얼굴을 쳐다보네
Sheep-dogs cannot turn her course,                      양치기 개는 그녀의 방향을 못 돌리고
They slumber on with paws across,                      계속 발을 모으고 졸고 있고
In the farm she passes, no one wakes                   지나가는 마을엔 모두 잠들었네
But a jug in a bedroom gently shakes.                    침실의 빈 주전자만 흔들리네

다큐 수업 시간에 보여주는 <Night Mail>에 나오는 시(일부)입니다.
"그녀"는 물론 기차를 가리키고, "무표정한 얼굴"은 기차의 前面이 무표정이니 하는 말.
나름 각운을 맞춰보려고 했습니다.^^
