추격자 (The Times)

영국의 타임스가 "2008년 최악의 영화 100편"에 <추격자>를 포함시켰다고 해서 찾아보았다.
국내 웹에 돌아다니는 번역이 잘못된 것 같아서 소개하고자 한다.

"잔인하고 짜증나는 스릴러"는 "scuzzy, violent thriller"의 번역 같은데, 여기서 'scuzzy'는
내가 보기에 영화에 대한 불쾌함을 표시한 거라기 보다는 - 그런 면도 있을 수 있지만 - 화면의
내용/스타일을 묘사한 것 같다. 즉, 장소(로케이션)가 더럽고 조명이 로키이고 잔인함이 노골적으로 묘사되고.. 등을 의미하는 것 같다. 흔히 "리얼하다"라고 말하는 것과 비슷한 게 아닐까.

"교묘히 꼬인 줄거리"는 "The plot is deftly twisted"의 번역인데, 이 역시 번역만큼 부정적인
뉘앙스는 아닌 것 같다. "능숙하게 비틀었다" 정도? 냉소적으로 하는 말이라고 볼 수도 있겠
지만 이어지는 문장을 보면 아닌 것 같다.

"Kim brings charisma to that old archetype"를 "김윤식은 카리스마의 원형만 연기한다"라고
했는데, 이 또한 김윤석이 전형적인 캐릭터이긴 하지만 연기를 잘했다는 뜻으로 보인다.

그렇다면 왜 최악의 영화에 포함되었는가? 유일하게 (확실히) 부정적인 표현은 "The film’s
grimness, however, is wearying"이다. 즉, 그 영화의 grimness(≒scuzziness)가 사람을
지치게 한다는 것이다. 그런데 이게 별 2개(5개 만점)의 이유로 충분한가?
글쎄, 아마 자세히 얘기할 필요가 없다고 생각한 건지도 모르겠다.


In the latest scuzzy, violent thriller to reach us from South Korea, a cop turned pimp (Kim Yun-Seok) roams through the lower depths of Seoul in search of one of his prostitutes, who has fallen into the hands of a killer. The plot is deftly twisted, and Kim brings charisma to that old archetype: a lowlife who thinks he has jettisoned his conscience and is therefore annoyed when it suddenly plays up. The film’s grimness, however, is wearying. I think that a little more flamboyance from the director, Na Hong-jin, might have justified the melodrama of the final scenes and generally made things more fun.
