The Virgin Spring

끔찍한 범죄에 가담한 (사실 이 아이는 방관한 죄밖에 없지만) 것 때문에 천벌을 두려워하고
있는 아이에게 거지가 하는 말. 실내에 피워 놓은 불에서 연기가 지붕의 구멍으로 나가고 있다.

You see how the smoke trembles up in the roof hole?
연기가 저 위 지붕의 구멍에서 흔들거리는 게 보이지?
As if whimpering and afraid.
마치 두려움에 떠는 것처럼 말이야.
Yet it's only going out into the open air,
하지만 그건 열린 하늘로 나가고 있을 뿐이야.
where it has the whole sky to tumble about in.
마음대로 뒹굴 수 있는 광대한 하늘.
But it doesn't know that.
하지만 그건(연기는) 그것을 모르고 있어.
So it cowers and trembles under the sooty ridge of the roof.
그래서 그건 검댕으로 얼룩진 용마루 밑에서 움츠리고 떨고 있지.
People are the same way.
사람도 마찬가지야.
They worry and tremble like leaves in a storm...
그들은 폭풍 속의 잎처럼 근심하고 떨고 있어.
because of what they know
그들이 알고 있는 것과
and what they don't know.
모르고 있는 것들 때문에.
