At Noon

The thick-walled room’s cave-darkness, 

여름에 시원한, 벽이 두꺼운 그 방의
cool in summer, soothes

동굴 같은 어둠은 "이것이 진리다,

by saying, This is the truth, not the taut

매미 소리 팽팽한 햇빛이 아니라"고 말하며
cicada-strummed daylight.

달래준다.

Rest here, out of the flame—the thick air’s

"화염을 벗어나 여기서 쉬게"
stirred by the fan’s four

그 두터운 공기는 천장팬의
slow-moving spoons; under the house the stone

천천히 움직이는 네 스푼에 의해 흐트러진다.
has its feet in deep water.

집의 밑에는 돌이 깊은 물속에 발을 담그고 있다.
Outside, even the sun god, dressed in this life

바깥에는, 현생에 도마뱀 모습을 한
as a lizard, abruptly rises

태양신조차 불쑥 빳빳한 다리로 일어서서
on stiff legs and descends blasé toward the shadows.

그늘 속으로 태연히 들어간다.

더위와 시원함을 대비시킨 게 아니라 (그런 것도 물론 있지만)

빛과 어둠을 대비시킨 게 포인트인 듯하다.

보통은 빛이 진리를 상징하지만 여기서는 어둠이 '이것이 진리다'고 말한다.
