The Balloon

Silent with upturn’d eye unbreathing crowds

모두 얼굴을 하늘로 향하고 숨죽이며
Pursue the floating wonder to the clouds;

'떠 있는 경이로움'이 구름으로 향하는 걸 눈으로 쫓는다
And flush’d with transport, or benumb’d with fear

넋이 빠진 채, 혹은 가슴을 잔뜩 졸인 채
Watch, as it rises, the diminish’d sphere.

구(球)가 상승하며 작아지는 걸 쳐다본다
Now less and less – and now a speck is seen –

이제 점점 더 작아져 하나의 점이 된다
And now the fleeting rack obtrudes between!

그러고는 흐르는 구름에 가려져 버린다!

 

The calm Philosopher in ether sails,

철학자는 차분하게 에테르 속을 항해한다 (당시엔 '과학자'란 단어가 없었다)
Views broader stars and breathes in purer gales;

더 광대한 별하늘을 바라보고, 더 순수한 바람을 들이킨다
Sees like a map in many a waving line,

구불구불한 선들이 지도처럼 보인다 (문장이 애매함)
Round earth’s blue plains her lucid waters shine;

둥근 지구의 파란 평원, 그 명료한 바다가 빛난다
Sees at his feet the forky lightning glow

자신의 발밑에서 번갯불이 갈라지는 걸 보며
And hears innocuous thunder roar below.

해(害) 없는 천둥이 아래에서 우르릉거리는 걸 듣는다. (자신에게 해가 없다는 뜻일 것임)
