The Cherry Trees

 

The cherry trees bend over and are shedding

벚나무들이 몸을 굽히고
On the old road where all that passed are dead, 

지나간 사람들은 모두 죽은 옛길에
Their petals, strewing the grass as for a wedding

꽃잎을 풀에 흩뿌린다, 마치 결혼식을 축하하듯
This early May morn when there is none to wed.

결혼하는 이 아무도 없는 5월의 이 이른 아침.

전쟁(1차대전)에 가서 죽은 병사들을 염두에 둔 것으로 보인다. 에드워드 토마스 자신도

37세이던 1915년에 참전하여 1917년에 전사하였다.
