A Prayer That Will Be Answered

Lord let me suffer much
and then die

주여, 고통을 많이 받고/그러고는 죽게 해 주소서

Let me walk through silence
and leave nothing behind not even fear

침묵 속을 걷고/아무것도 두려움조차도 남기지 않게 해 주소서

Make the world continue
let the ocean kiss the sand just as before

세상이 계속되게/바다가 전과 똑같이 모래를 키스하게 하소서

Let the grass stay green
so that the frogs can hide in it

풀이 여전히 푸르게/그래서 개구리가 숨을 수 있게 해 주소서

so that someone can bury his face in it
and sob out his love

그래서 누군가 거기에 얼굴을 묻고/사랑을 울 수 있게 해 주소서

Make the day rise brightly
as if there were no more pain

하루가 마치 더 이상 고통이 없을 것처럼/밝게 시작하게 하소서

And let my poem stand clear as a windowpane
bumped by a bumblebee’s head
그리고 저의 시가 뒤영벌이 머리를 부딪는/유리창처럼 투명하게 해 주소서

제목은 '들어줄 기도', 즉 기도가 통하지 않는 이 세계에서 이것만큼은 통할 기도라는 것이다.

 

마지막의 'stand clear'는 투명하다는 의미로 해석할 수 있지만 진로를 방해하지 않는다는 의미도 될 수 있다. 그래서 윗줄에서 실제로는 고통이 있지만 그렇지 않은 것처럼 아침이 밝다고 했듯이, 이 'stand clear'는 실제로는 방해물이지만 그렇지 않은 것처럼 보인다는 의미로도 해석할 수 있을 것 같다.

 

미국 작가 Christian Wiman이 쓴 어떤 글에서 본 시인데, 그는 조지 허버트의 시 한 구절도 인용한다. “Ah my dear God! … Let me not love thee, if I love thee not,” (신이시여, 당신을 사랑하지 않는다면 사랑하지 않는 것도 허락해 주소서)
