When the Earl King came             괴테의 시에서,
to steal away the child                 마왕이 아이를
in Goethe’s poem, the father said  훔쳐 가려고 왔을 때
don’t be afraid,                            아버지는 겁먹지 말라고 말했다

it’s just the wind. . .                     그건 단지 바람일 뿐이라고...
As if it weren’t the wind                마치 이 세상의 연약한 조각들을
that blows away the tender           날려 버리는 것은
fragments of this world?              바람이 아닌 듯이.

leftover leaves in the corners        조각들 -
of the garden, a Lenten Rose        뜰 구석에 남겨진 잎들,
that thought it safe                       그렇게 일찍 피어나도 괜찮다고 생각한
to bloom so early.                       사순절 장미.

괴테의 시("마왕")에서 아버지가 바람은 별것 아닌 것, 해가 없는 것으로 간주했지만
그게 아니라는 말.

"마왕"에서 죽는 아이와 이 시에서 "일찍 피어난 조각"은 이미지가 상통하는 것 같다.

Lenten Rose는 장미처럼 생겼지만 식물학적으로 장미는 아니라고 한다. 겨울에 핀다.

"마왕"은 슈베르트의 작곡으로 유명하다. 아래는 바람이 언급되는 부분(원문은 물론 독어).

"My father, my father, and dost thou not hear
아버지, 아버지, 들리지 않나요
The words that the Erl-King now breathes in mine ear?"
마왕이 내 귀에 속삭이는 소리가?
"Be calm, dearest child, 'tis thy fancy deceives;
아가야, 걱정 말아라, 네 상상일 뿐이야
'Tis the sad wind that sighs through the withering leaves."
그건 시든 잎들 사이를 지나는 슬픈 바람일 뿐이란다.
