Mockingbird II

    How perfectly he has mastered               그는 자동차 경고음을 얼마나 잘 흉내 내었는가!
the car alarm, jangling us from sleep.           우리는 신경이 곤두서 잠에서 깨곤 했다.
    Later his staccato scatters smaller birds   나중엔 그의 그 스타카토 음은 전선 위에
that landed on the wire beside him.              함께 앉은 작은 새들을 흩어버리는 역할도 했다.
    Perhaps the key to success                    성공의 열쇠는 독창성이 아니라
is imitation, not originality.                           모방인지 모른다. 
    Once, when the cat slinked up                한 번은, 고양이가 오렌지 나무를 몰래 올라가
the orange tree and snatched a hatchling,    갓 부화한 새끼를 채 갔을 때,
    the mockingbird turned on us,                 그 앵무새는 복수을 칼을
marked us for revenge.                               우리에게로 돌렸다.
    For two whole weeks he dive bombed      2주 내내 그는 내가 그의 소리에 속아
whenever I ventured out the screen door       문 밖으로 나올 때마다 급강하 공격을 했다.
    lured by his call: first tricked into thinking  처음엔 부드럽게 구구 하는 소리에
the soft coo was a mourning dove courting,   산비둘기들이 구애하고 있는 줄 알았다.
    next drawn by the war cry of a far larger animal. 다음엔 훨씬 큰 동물의 포효에 끌려 나갔다.
He swooped from one splintered eave, his mate from the other, 그는 쪼개진 처마 한 쪽에서
    aiming to peck out my eyes, to wrestle      그의 짝은 다른 쪽에서, 덥쳤다, 내 눈을 쪼으려고,
the baby from my arms, to do God knows what 내 품에서 아기를 채 가려고, 하느님,
    with that newborn.                                  그 갓난애에게 무슨 짓을 하려는지.
