The Consent

Late in November, on a single night 
늦은 11월, 그렇게 차지도 않은 날,
Not even near to freezing, the ginkgo trees
하룻밤 사이에 길가의 은행나무들이
That stand along the walk drop all their leaves
합심한 듯 한꺼번에 모든 잎을 떨어뜨린다
In one consent, and neither to rain nor to wind
비 때문도, 바람 때문도 아니다
But as though to time alone: the golden and green
마치 그냥 시간에 맞춘 듯하다
Leaves litter the lawn today, that yesterday 
어제만 해도 저 높이 팔랑이는 빛의 부채를 펼쳤던
Had spread aloft their fluttering fans of light.
금색, 녹색 잎들이 오늘 잔디밭을 뒤덮었다
 
What signal from the stars? What senses took it in?
별들로부터 어떤 신호를? 어떤 감각(기능)이 그것을 받아들였나?
What in those wooden motives so decided
그 무뚝뚝한 마음이 어떻게 동하여 그렇게
To strike their leaves, to down their leaves,
자신의 잎들을 쳐내기로, 쓰러뜨리기로 결심했나,
Rebellion or surrender? and if this
반란인가 항복인가? 그리고 이런 일이
Can happen thus, what race shall be exempt?
그렇게 일어날 수 있다면, 다른 종도 마찬가지 아니겠는가?
What use to learn the lessons taught by time,
시간이 가르쳐준 교훈을 배우는 게 무슨 소용인가
If a star at any time may tell us: Now.
별이 언제든 우리에게 말할 수 있는데: "지금이다".
